Rotary Peace Fellowships  http://www.rcthm.org/rotary-peace-fellowships/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 19:20:53 +0000 https://www.rcthm.org/?p=2063 Each year, Rotary awards fully funded fellowships for peacebuilders from diverse backgrounds to study at one of our peace centers located at premier universities around the world. This year, we’ll select 50 peace fellows to study in our master’s degree programs and 40 fellows to earn a professional development certificate.

Our more than 1,600 program alumni work in over 140 countries and serve as leaders in governments and nongovernmental organizations, education and research, law enforcement and the military, as well as in international organizations dedicated to peace. Rotary Peace Fellows use their training to amplify their work at the local, regional, or global level. Clubs and districts can partner with them on peacebuilding initiatives before, during, and after their fellowships.

The fellowships pay for tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship and field study expenses for either a master’s degree or a professional development certificate. The centers provide customized studies and offer field-based learning opportunities.

Master’s degree programs

Accepted candidates study peace and development issues with research-informed teaching and a diverse student body. The programs last 15 to 24 months and include a two- to three-month field study, which participants design themselves.

Professional development certificate program

During the one-year blended learning program, experienced peace and development professionals with diverse backgrounds gain practical skills to promote peace within their communities and across the globe. Fellows complete field studies and design and carry out a social change initiative. This program is intended for working professionals. Fellows earn a post-graduate diploma upon completion of the program.

Rotary members, Clubs and districts have the power to shape the next generation of peace leaders both by recruiting and nominating peace fellows, and by keeping them engaged after the fellowship ends.

Every Rotary year, district governors appoint a District Rotary Peace Fellowship Subcommittee Chair to oversee the Rotary Peace Fellowship application and endorsement process. The subcommittee chairs, along with additional trained Rotary endorsers, interview candidates and submit endorsement decisions. Rotary endorsement is required before The Rotary Foundation can consider a candidate. Clubs help by recommending and coaching qualified candidates.

Raindrop in an oyster http://www.rcthm.org/international-project/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 17:17:08 +0000 https://www.rcthm.org/?p=2038 Congratulations to our long serving member Badri Madan on his new book launch!

Raindrop in an Oyster Is an autobiography by Badri Madan written to be a source of inspiration to younger generations in the Indian diaspora and to all of those who read it.

It depicts his journey through life and how the hardships that Badri faced as a child of Partition developed his character. The book describes his journey through the refugee camps, settling in Faisalipur Majra, his education in Panipat and Chandigar and his decision to leave India in order to study International Law in the The Hague Academy of International Law at the Peace palace in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands Badri raised a loving family, contributed to the local community and played a significant part in building cultural, economic, and social relations between the communities of India and the Netherlands. Badri received the Royal Award, “Ridder in de orde van Oranje -Nassau”, from the King of the Netherlands in 2018. His book is a rich tapestry of memoirs and life lessons. All of us at RCTHM wish Badri every success with this wonderful book!

An update of the Polio Eradication Programme http://www.rcthm.org/an-update-of-the-polio-eradication-programme/ Tue, 10 May 2022 11:00:08 +0000 https://www.rcthm.org/?p=1956 In a joint meeting with the international Rotary Club Amstelveen, Mr. Michel Zaffran gave us a presentation about the state of the Polio Eradication Programme which has been carried out by Rotary International in cooperation with WHO, CDC, Unicef and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This vaccination campaign began in 1985, when 300,000 Polio cases were reported in 125 different countries throughout the world.

Through coordinated efforts the virus has been eradicated in 5 out of 6 regions in the world. Only a very small number of cases remain : 140 in 2020, 5 in 2021, 3 in 2022 reported only in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The current target is for there to be no more cases at all by 2023 ! In order to prevent the risk of the virus from mutating and spreading again, the vaccinations have to be continued for some more years.

Since the beginning of the campaign, 3 billion children have been vaccinated, which has prevented 19 million children from being paralyzed and saved 1.5 million lives. This is an achievement of which we, as Rotarians, can be really proud. #endpolio

Understanding human trafficking http://www.rcthm.org/understanding-human-trafficking/ Fri, 19 Oct 2018 17:48:29 +0000 http://localhost/rcthm/?p=1347 After learning about the worldwide problem our youth faces with human trafficking, The Rotary Club of The Hague Metropolitan is considering a series of activities to fight this disease. The initial step was to have Detective Bill Woolf from Just Ask Prevention in the United States give us a presentation on this matter that we are sharing with all of you.

We will continue with other activities that may include training local school teachers and local leaders on how to protect our community and our youth by providing them with tools and resources to defend themselves against human trafficking.
